More evidence comes to light about unwarranted warming of the surface temperature record

With one stoke of computer code between 1999 and 2000, the continental United States, with the best temperature measurement system in the world, went from a history of cooling from the great Dust Bowl days of the 1930s to considerable warming according to the U.S. government’s Goddard Institute for Space Studies (GISS, headed at the time by notorious environmentalist radical, Dr. James Hansen): https://stevengoddard.files.wordpress.com/2010/10/1998changesannotated.gif .  More details on the changes can be found here: https://stevengoddard.wordpress.com/data-tampering-at-ushcngiss/

Those are the actual graphs that were published on the GISS web site itself (with the scales made to match between the two graphs).  The Global Historical Climate Network (GHCN) continues in the same vein, with temperatures adjusted higher with each succeeding “version,” further enhancing the apparent warming of the planet.

It is clear that while some adjusting is necessary to account for station location changes, time of observation bias (TOB), etc., the degree to which the various global databases have been warmed by artificial adjustments are overestimated even without taking into account methodological errors (see https://notalotofpeopleknowthat.wordpress.com/2015/02/09/how-much-do-temperature-adjustments-affect-global-temperatures/).

When looking at actual individual station adjustments from the raw data, it turns out that the GHCN produces spectacular changes in temperature history that find no basis in the real world (as opposed to the artificial world in which blunt force, computer-generated adjustments are made to temperature databases in an effort to produce a “homogenized” data set).

While the bias introduced by this massaging of the data has long been understood by many researchers, they are just now starting to do more comprehensive examination of individual station raw temperature histories (including surrounding stations) and then comparing them with the massaged data that is produced by computer algorithms.

As it turns out, it is becoming more and more clear that there is less justification (and often none at all, at least that fits into the usual explanations given by temperature data aggregators such as NASA and NOAA) for the adjustments which are made than previously assumed.   Which leads to the present article where the author states the following:

When future generations look back on the global-warming scare of the past 30 years, nothing will shock them more than the extent to which the official temperature records – on which the entire [global warming] panic ultimately rested – were systematically “adjusted” to show the Earth as having warmed much more than the actual data justified.

California Drought – A Novel Statistical Analysis of Unrealistic Climate Models and of a Reanalysis That Should Not Be Equated with Reality

Using models to establish California Drought is related to “climate change” depends on flawed analysis.

Bob Tisdale - Climate Observations

In the post The Obvious Failures of Climate Science That Mainstream Media Ignores, I promised to discuss the paper behind the National Science Foundation press release Cause of California drought linked to climate change. That paper was Swain et al. (2014) “The Extraordinary California Drought of 2013/2014: Character, Context and the Role of Climate Change”. It is included in the Special Supplement to the Bulletin of the American Meteorological Society (BAMS report) Vol. 95, No. 9, September 2014, Explaining Extreme Events of 2013 From A Climate Perspective.

Newly discovered satellite data – Scientists can’t explain “enormous holes” in 1960s Arctic sea ice

 nimbus-sep9-1969-holes-in-ice

“What the researchers didn’t expect were ‘enormous holes’ in the [Arctic] sea ice…. ‘We can’t explain them yet,… And the Antarctic blew us away.’ ”

via Nimbus data rescue.

Nor is the current satellite record, dating only to the late 1970s, enough to cover a single entire sea-ice cycle which can take roughly 60 years to complete, in conjunction with the other oceanic temperature cycles such as the Pacific Decadal Oscillation (PDO) and the Atlantic Multidecadal Oscillation (AMO).

When you hear the words “in recorded history” appended to a claim about climate change, it is important to remember that our recorded history for most elements of the climate is very limited.  Even truly-global air temperature measurements by satellites began only in late 1978. Global ocean heat content measurements began only in the 2000s (and still, it’s only to a depth of 3000 meters–we have no real clue as to what’s going on below that depth in any reliable way), and excludes areas in the ocean covered by sea ice such as the Arctic and Antarctic.

The earth’s climate system is, and always has been, in a constant state of change.  So are the data available to measure that climate system.

New evidence for oceans of water deep in the Earth

Water bound in mantle rock alters our view of the Earth’s composition

Researchers from Northwestern University and the University of New Mexico report evidence for potentially oceans worth of water deep beneath the United States. Though not in the familiar liquid form — the ingredients for water are bound up in rock deep in the Earth’s mantle — the discovery may represent the planet’s largest water reservoir.
